Shade sail in Bastia: a tensioned fabric, made-to-measureShade, and air.

Beige shade sail stretched between the ochre façade of a house and a dark metal mast, above a stone terrace with bistro tables and folding chairs, harbour, colourful façades and a twin-towered church in the background.

A fabric stretched between a few anchor points: the sail covers a courtyard or a roof without a heavy structure. In Bastia, everything depends on those points, because of the wind.

Made-to-measure shade sail in Corsica

A shade sail, made to measure, casts shade over your terrace, your garden or your pool.

LumiDesign designs and installs made-to-measure shade sails. They protect your outdoor space from the sun and give it a modern look. On a terrace, in a garden or beside a pool, they blend into the setting.

We work throughout Corsica: Ajaccio, Bastia, Porto-Vecchio, Bonifacio, Île-Rousse and beyond. Our sails are made from quality materials. They are robust, withstand the island's climate and protect you effectively, for a long time.

Curved edges The edges are cut in a curve, to spread the tension across the whole fabric.

High point, low point With anchors at different heights, the fabric forms a saddle and water runs towards the low point.

Tensioner At each corner, a tensioner pulls the fabric taut.

Mast Where the house ends, a mast takes over. Its height sets the slope of the fabric.

Tensioned fabric A fabric tensioned between several anchor points, which stops the sun and lets air through.

Façade anchor A plate fixed into the wall. The installation is safe and durable if the anchor points are securely fixed.

  2. At noon, the sun is at its highest and the four-point fabric covers the lounge. At noon, four points cover the lounge.
  3. In the afternoon, the shadow has turned towards the east and two sails cross. In the afternoon, two sails cross.
  4. In the evening, the sun is low and slips under the fabric, which stands out against the sky. In the evening, the sun slips under the fabric.

The need

Sun, heat, and rain.

A shade sail is a fabric tensioned between several anchor points, to create shade.

The summer sun
It protects effectively against UV rays.
The heat
It lets air through, naturally ventilating the space in summer.
A terrace, a garden, a pool
Each sail is made to measure, to cover the area properly.
The island's climate
Our fabrics resist bad weather, UV and water.
Rain
The sail protects first and foremost from the sun. With a waterproof fabric, it offers partial protection; it does not replace a permanent shelter such as a pergola.

Shade sail in Bastia

What changes in Bastia.

Raised paved terrace at sunset, wooden sofa with terracotta cushions under a large parasol, round coffee table, two sun loungers, potted olive trees, low stone walls, the harbour and a twin-towered church in the distance.

  1. The anchor points

It all comes down to three or four points.

A sail takes the libeccio like the sail of a boat. Each anchor point must therefore hold: a wall in good condition, a mast on a sound footing, a fixing chosen for that surface. On an old Bastia façade, we check the masonry before drilling.

Where there is no wall, a mast takes its place, as in the illustration. In a triangle, three points are enough for the corner of a terrace; with four points at different heights, the sail covers a whole dining area. We fix the anchors and tension the fabric ourselves.

  2. The fabric

    A fabric that stays taut.

We work with Serge Ferrari fabrics. The manufacturer intends the waterproof Soltis 502 Proof for shade sails; it states it withstands winds of up to 160 km/h for a 12 m² sail, and says its fabric does not deform under load, so it never needs re-tensioning.

The 502 Proof comes in 35 colours, woven from recycled polyester yarn. A waterproof fabric needs slope: with a saddle shape, water runs to the low point, whereas a fabric that is too flat holds it. Some sails have a drainage system.

    See Serge Ferrari fabrics
  3. Courtyard and roof

    For courtyards and rooftops.

In a courtyard between two houses, the walls provide the anchor points and the sail closes off the top without blocking the view. On a roof terrace, it gives shade where a fixed structure would be heavy to carry up the stairs.

The sail lets air through, which matters on a terrace in full sun. Its first job is keeping off the sun: even when waterproof, it only partly shelters from rain and does not replace a pergola.

Your questions, our answers.

Do you install shade sails in Bastia?

Yes. We design the sail with you, made-to-measure, and our team installs it in Bastia after a technical visit to your home. Our shade sail page tells you more.

Will a shade sail hold up in the libeccio?

The fabric will: Serge Ferrari states it withstands winds of up to 160 km/h for a 12 m² sail in Soltis 502 Proof. What decides it is the anchor points. We check each one during the visit: the wall, the mast, the fixing.

Can a sail be fixed to the front of an apartment building?

If the wall is sound and the co-owners agree, yes. Otherwise, masts take over. In an apartment building, talk to the managing agent before the project: the anchoring affects the façade.

Does a shade sail protect from rain?

Partly, with a waterproof fabric such as Soltis 502 Proof and enough slope. For real shelter, the better choice is a bioclimatic pergola.

How much does a shade sail cost in Bastia?

Every sail is made-to-measure: its price depends on the size, the fabric and the anchor points. We set the price on quotation, after the technical visit.

How can I contact you to discuss my sun protection or outdoor design project?

Our team answers your questions and presents our services. You can reach us in three ways:

What is a shade sail and what are its advantages?

A shade sail is a fabric tensioned between several anchor points to create shade. It protects effectively against UV rays and lets air through. Beautiful and practical, it makes outdoor spaces comfortable in summer.

How long does a shade sail last?

Made from quality materials and regularly maintained, a shade sail can last for several years. Our fabrics resist bad weather, UV and water, which helps them last even in the Corsican climate.

How do I choose the right size for my shade sail?

The size of the sail depends on the area you want to cover: a terrace, a garden, a pool. Our experts work out the right dimensions for your project with you. Each sail is then made to measure, to cover that area properly.
