A fabric stretched between a few anchor points: the lightest way to create shade on a terrace. In Bonifacio, everything comes down to those anchor points and to the tension, because of the wind.

Made-to-measure shade sail in Corsica

A shade sail, made to measure, casts shade over your terrace, your garden or your pool.

LumiDesign designs and installs made-to-measure shade sails. They protect your outdoor space from the sun and give it a modern look. On a terrace, in a garden or beside a pool, they blend into the setting.

We work throughout Corsica: Ajaccio, Bastia, Porto-Vecchio, Bonifacio, Île-Rousse and beyond. Our sails are made from quality materials. They are robust, withstand the island's climate and protect you effectively, for a long time.

Describe my outdoor space
  • Made-to-measure tensioned fabric

Curved edges The edges are cut in a curve, to spread the tension across the whole fabric.

High point, low point With anchors at different heights, the fabric forms a saddle and water runs towards the low point.

Tensioner At each corner, a tensioner pulls the fabric taut.

Mast Where the house ends, a mast takes over. Its height sets the slope of the fabric.

Tensioned fabric A fabric tensioned between several anchor points, which stops the sun and lets air through.

Façade anchor A plate fixed into the wall. The installation is safe and durable if the anchor points are securely fixed.

  2. At noon, the sun is at its highest and the four-point fabric covers the lounge. At noon, four points cover the lounge.
  3. In the afternoon, the shadow has turned towards the east and two sails cross. In the afternoon, two sails cross.
  4. In the evening, the sun is low and slips under the fabric, which stands out against the sky. In the evening, the sun slips under the fabric.

Shade sail in Bonifacio

What changes in Bonifacio.

Paved terrace at sunset: sofa with rust-coloured cushions, blue coffee table, woven armchair, two sun loungers under a parasol, dry-stone walls and lavender; in the distance, the upper town of Bonifacio on its cliffs above the sea.

  1. The principle

A fabric, a few anchor points.

A shade sail is a fabric stretched between several fixed points: a wall, a mast, a post. It puts little weight on the terrace and leaves the sides open. On a terrace of pale stone, which reflects the light, it shades the table or the lounge area without closing off the view of the cliffs and the sea.

A triangle, a square, two sails that cross: the shape depends on the area to be covered and the possible fixing points. We work out the dimensions with you, then the sail is made to measure, in the shape and colour you choose.

  2. Wind

It all comes down to the anchor points.

A sail catches the wind, like a boat’s sail. In Bonifacio, where the west wind is frequent and can rise suddenly, it is the anchor points that do the work: a fixing in an old wall, a sealed-in mast, a post that takes the pull. Fixing these points well and tensioning the fabric correctly is the heart of the installation, and that is why our team takes care of it.

Serge Ferrari states that its Soltis 502 Proof withstands winds of up to 160 km/h for a 12 m² sail. That is the manufacturer’s figure, for its fabric. On your terrace, how it holds also depends on the anchor points, the size and the orientation of the sail, which we look at during the technical visit. When a terrace is too exposed for a sail, we tell you.

    See Serge Ferrari fabrics
  3. The fabric

Shade alone, or a little shelter.

The choice of fabric depends on what you expect from the sail. A micro-perforated fabric lets air through, but water too. Soltis 502 Proof is waterproof: Serge Ferrari intends it for shade sails and pergola roofs, weaves it from fully recycled polyester yarn, and offers it in 35 colours.

Even when waterproof, a sail only partly protects from rain and does not replace a permanent shelter. Some sails have a drainage system to shed water better. For a terrace you want covered in every season, the bioclimatic pergola is the sounder answer.

    The bioclimatic pergola in Bonifacio

Your questions, our answers.

Do you install shade sails in Bonifacio?

Yes. Our showroom is in Porticcio, near Ajaccio, and we work throughout Corsica. We come to your home in Bonifacio for the technical visit, then our team fixes the anchor points and tensions the sail.

Will a shade sail stand up to the wind in Bonifacio?

It holds if its anchor points hold and if it is properly tensioned. Serge Ferrari states that its Soltis 502 Proof withstands winds of up to 160 km/h for a 12 m² sail; on site, how it holds also depends on the fixings and the size of the sail. We look at exposure to the west wind during the technical visit.

Can a shade sail be fixed to the wall of an old house?

Often, but not always: it all depends on the stone, its condition and the pull the sail will exert. When the wall is not suitable, a mast takes over. We check this at your home before designing the sail.

Does a shade sail protect from rain?

First and foremost it protects from the sun. With a waterproof fabric such as Soltis 502 Proof, it gives partial shelter from rain, without replacing a bioclimatic pergola.

How much does a shade sail cost in Bonifacio?

Each sail is made to measure: its price depends on the shape, the dimensions, the fabric and the anchor points. We set it out in a quote, after the technical visit.

How can I contact you to discuss my sun protection or outdoor design project?

Our team answers your questions and presents our services. You can reach us in three ways:

What is a shade sail and what are its advantages?

A shade sail is a fabric tensioned between several anchor points to create shade. It protects effectively against UV rays and lets air through. Beautiful and practical, it makes outdoor spaces comfortable in summer.

How long does a shade sail last?

Made from quality materials and regularly maintained, a shade sail can last for several years. Our fabrics resist bad weather, UV and water, which helps them last even in the Corsican climate.

How do I choose the right size for my shade sail?

The size of the sail depends on the area you want to cover: a terrace, a garden, a pool. Our experts work out the right dimensions for your project with you. Each sail is then made to measure, to cover that area properly.
