Made-to-measure shade sail in Corsica

A shade sail, made to measure, casts shade over your terrace, your garden or your pool.

LumiDesign designs and installs made-to-measure shade sails. They protect your outdoor space from the sun and give it a modern look. On a terrace, in a garden or beside a pool, they blend into the setting.

We work throughout Corsica: Ajaccio, Bastia, Porto-Vecchio, Bonifacio, Île-Rousse and beyond. Our sails are made from quality materials. They are robust, withstand the island's climate and protect you effectively, for a long time.

Curved edges The edges are cut in a curve, to spread the tension across the whole fabric.

High point, low point With anchors at different heights, the fabric forms a saddle and water runs towards the low point.

Tensioner At each corner, a tensioner pulls the fabric taut.

Mast Where the house ends, a mast takes over. Its height sets the slope of the fabric.

Tensioned fabric A fabric tensioned between several anchor points, which stops the sun and lets air through.

Façade anchor A plate fixed into the wall. The installation is safe and durable if the anchor points are securely fixed.

  1. In the morning, three points are enough. The triangular sail casts its shadow as far as the lounge. In the morning, the triangular sail is enough.
  2. At noon, the sun is at its highest and the four-point fabric covers the lounge. At noon, four points cover the lounge.
  3. In the afternoon, the shadow has turned towards the east and two sails cross. In the afternoon, two sails cross.
  4. In the evening, the sun is low and slips under the fabric, which stands out against the sky. In the evening, the sun slips under the fabric.

The need

Sun, heat, and rain.

A shade sail is a fabric tensioned between several anchor points, to create shade.

The summer sun
It protects effectively against UV rays.
The heat
It lets air through, naturally ventilating the space in summer.
A terrace, a garden, a pool
Each sail is made to measure, to cover the area properly.
The island's climate
Our fabrics resist bad weather, UV and water.
Rain
The sail protects first and foremost from the sun. With a waterproof fabric, it offers partial protection; it does not replace a permanent shelter such as a pergola.

Shade sail in L’Île-Rousse

What changes in L’Île-Rousse.

Infinity pool terrace facing the mountains: double teak sun lounger, olive tree in a white pot and a copper-brown bioclimatic pergola beyond.
Casa Petra teak and olive wood sun lounger by the pool
  1. Light shade

A fabric stretched above the terrace.

By a pool, in a village courtyard or on a terrace looking out to sea, the sail covers without enclosing. It is attached to the facade, a wall or masts, and positioned according to the path of the sun over the spot to be shaded.

Three points for a triangle, four for a larger dining area. By fixing the anchor points at different heights, you give the fabric a slight twist that stiffens it and guides rainwater towards one corner; a sail fitted too flat holds pockets of water.

  2. The fabric

    Serge Ferrari’s fabric.

Serge Ferrari reserves its Soltis 502 Proof for shade sails and pergola roofs: a waterproof fabric woven from 100% recycled polyester yarn. The manufacturer states it withstands winds up to 160 km/h for a 12 m² sail made from this fabric.

Again according to Serge Ferrari, its Précontraint process stops the fabric from deforming under load, with no re-tensioning after installation, and its outdoor Soltis fabrics are rated Euroclass B-s2,d0 for fire. An open-weave fabric, on the other hand, lets air and water through: tell us whether you want shade alone or shelter too.

    See Serge Ferrari fabrics
  3. Wind and anchor points

Every anchor point carries the sail.

The coastal wind pulls on every corner of the sail. A rendered facade, an old stone wall or a mast set in the ground do not take the same load: at the technical visit, we examine them one by one, and a mast takes over where the wall is not enough.

For a house used mainly in summer, think about the off-season too: a sail left up all winter takes the wind and salt with no one to keep an eye on it. We discuss this from the first visit, so that it stays easy to live with from one summer to the next.

    Ask us a question

Your questions, our answers.

Do you install shade sails in L’Île-Rousse?

Yes, in L’Île-Rousse and the Balagne, as throughout Corsica. We come to measure and look at the supports, then our team tensions the sail. The L’Île-Rousse page presents our other services.

Which fabric for a shade sail by the sea?

Serge Ferrari designs its waterproof Soltis 502 Proof for shade sails, and states it withstands winds up to 160 km/h for a 12 m² sail. On site, we check the anchor points and exposure to wind.

Does a shade sail keep out rain?

Partly, with a waterproof fabric and enough slope. It remains first and foremost shade: for shelter in every season, a bioclimatic pergola is better suited.

Do you need a mast to tension a shade sail?

Not always. A facade or a solid wall can serve as an anchor point; if a support is missing, or if the wall cannot take the load, we add a mast. We decide at the technical visit.

What price for a made-to-measure shade sail?

Each sail is cut for its terrace: the area, the fabric and the anchor points set the price. We price it on quotation, after the visit.

How can I contact you to discuss my sun protection or outdoor design project?

Our team answers your questions and presents our services. You can reach us in three ways:

What is a shade sail and what are its advantages?

A shade sail is a fabric tensioned between several anchor points to create shade. It protects effectively against UV rays and lets air through. Beautiful and practical, it makes outdoor spaces comfortable in summer.

How long does a shade sail last?

Made from quality materials and regularly maintained, a shade sail can last for several years. Our fabrics resist bad weather, UV and water, which helps them last even in the Corsican climate.

How do I choose the right size for my shade sail?

The size of the sail depends on the area you want to cover: a terrace, a garden, a pool. Our experts work out the right dimensions for your project with you. Each sail is then made to measure, to cover that area properly.
