In the upper town as in the villages, many houses in Corte have only a balcony or a small terrace against the façade. An awning gives summer shade there and folds away when it is no longer needed.

Fabric A blackout fabric makes the room dark, a light-filtering fabric softens the light, and some let you see through.

Side channels On each side, they guide the fabric; the bottom bar keeps it taut.

Exterior blind Fitted in front of the glazing, it stops the sun before it comes in.

The blind, in context

You control the light.

  1. In the morning, the sun is still in the east. The blinds stay up and the view is clear. In the morning, the blinds stay up.
  2. At noon, it is at its highest, due south. The south blinds come down: the sun stays outside. At noon, the south blinds come down.
  3. In the late afternoon, it comes in from the west. As the fabric comes down, the patch of sun shrinks. At 5 pm, the sun comes in from the west.
  4. In the evening, it skims the horizon. With the fabric down, it no longer dazzles. In the evening, fabric down, no more glare.

What changes in Corte.

  1. The balcony

    Little space, plenty of sun.

    Corte’s old houses often open onto the street through a narrow balcony, or onto a small sloping terrace. There is no room for a pergola, but the façade can carry an awning: an aluminium cassette fixed to the wall, arms that extend the fabric, and shade falls on the balcony and in front of the window.

    Pratic awnings, T-Hide, T-Code, T-Way or Flex Box, fix to the wall or the ceiling, with LED lighting in the cassette. With a micro-perforated Serge Ferrari Soltis 96 fabric, air passes through and less heat builds up under the awning: useful on July afternoons, when the valley heats up.

  2. The storm

    Retracted before the storm.

    An awning is for shade. It is not a shelter from a mountain downpour, nor from the gusts that come with it: when the storm approaches, you retract it into its cassette. On its folding-arm awnings, Pratic highlights a patent of its own, FlexControl.

    So that you do not have to watch the sky, there are automatic controls. Bandalux offers wind, sun and temperature sensors that adjust its awnings automatically. Roma states that its fabric blinds, guided by a zip, withstand winds up to 120 km/h, depending on the size of the blind and how it is mounted.

  3. The window

    The vertical blind, in front of the glass.

    When the sun hits a window rather than a balcony, a vertical blind comes down in front of the glass. On a zip screen, the fabric is held in its side channels by a zip and does not flap in the wind. Bandalux rates its Z-Box at wind class 6 under the EN 13561 standard, the highest rating.

    In an old stone house, bringing electricity to the window is not always simple. Bandalux’s Z-Box Solar runs on a solar panel and a battery, with no wiring. During the technical visit, we look at the thickness and condition of the wall, and the access from the lane.

Do you install awnings in Corte?

Yes: awnings, zip screens and vertical blinds, in Corte and the surrounding villages. Our showroom is in Porticcio, near Ajaccio, and we work throughout Corsica. We come to carry out the technical visit at your home, then our team installs the awning.

Can an awning be fitted to a stone house in Corte?

It depends on the wall: its type, its condition, the space above the window or balcony. A Pratic awning fixes to the wall or the ceiling. We look at the support at your home, during the technical visit, before proposing a model.

Should an awning be retracted in a storm?

Yes. An awning gives shade; it is not made to hold up in a downpour or storm gusts. Wind sensors can take care of it: Bandalux offers some that adjust its awnings automatically.

Which blind for a window in the afternoon sun?

A vertical blind, ideally a zip screen, whose fabric is held by a zip. With a micro-perforated fabric, you keep the view outside. Our page on made-to-measure awnings presents them, and the configurator lets you design one.

How much does an awning cost in Corte?
